Meetings meetings!

Alex also met with the World Bank to introduce the IPN and to pave the way for Lynn from MiET who will meet with them again in June! No concrete outcomes yet but a good start to discussions with the World Bank!
The final meeting of the trip was with Ranjit Sidhu, another former associate of Betsy and Alex when he worked at the National Asscoiation of Partners in Education (NAPE), here in Washington. He now is a director of ACT inc which is a national organisation which provides tests and assessments. They have, in particular , assessments for workplace readiness (ie in the learning to earning arena). Ranjit has contacts across the US which we hope to be able to tap in to. He is interested in the conference in South Africa and will also talk to the International arm of ACT. He talked about new routes to accessing partnership activity across the US and also mentioned the Community College movent and ACT’s work with them and the Partnership approaches they adopt.

Global Space Conference

On Wednesday Alex presented a paper that he and Val Caldwell wrote on the IPN’s activities around Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM), focused on space. The presentation was met with great interest and some discussion around our proposed programmes and the conference in South Africa. there are no photos of the presentation but I have attached one of Alex and Jamie Semple. Jamie worked at the Space Centre Houston and led a team of educators who provide hands on experiences to space school participants. He now works with NASA in the education team which runs a unique education programme flying teachers and students, with their experiments , in the zero G plane so that they can experience weightlessness and carry out experiments in this environment.

A blast from the past!

Alex had a pretty packed schedule! He met Connie Spinner, the Dean of the Community College at the University of DC. They reminisced about previous joint involvement in the National Association of Partners in Education, NAPE, and the conferences they both attended here in Washington and in other cities, including Houston. The meeting was set up by Betsy Nelson as she is a long time colleague from the days of NAPE. Connie and her staff work with communities of DC and have extensive partnerships with business and others in the community. She is also developing a ” Charter School”. Connie is keen to re-engage with the IPN and will help us to extend our reach in America. She is also keen to come to South Africa and present on her activities here in DC. The IPN will definately keep in touch with Connie!

From Paris to Washington

Ok, so some of us came home from Paris, but Alex was off to Washington DC, for the Global Space Exploration Conference and a series of meetings…. ! Its a hard life being the CEO of the IPN. Before delivering a paper at the education ‘Technical Session of the conference, Alex met up with a couple of old friends, Doug Cooke, who headed up NASA’s mars exploration programme and Rob Alexander who works with NASA at the Johnson Space Centre on ISS safety at mission control. Rob also runs an International Space School so there may be opportunities for some partnership working. He also has contacts in South Africa which he will pass on!!

IPN in France and Washington

Haven’t posted much recently but not because things have been quiet! Here in Scotland and in South Africa we are working hard on preparations for IPN2012! Members of the Board met last week in St Georges-Motel for a Board meeting and lots of planning for the event in September. It was a busy few days but we got lots done…the programme is almost ready to be published so keep and eye on the conference web site www.ipnconference2012.org
It was great to meet some members of the Board for the first time, Devika and Laurel, and also Carol as well as meeting Jane Roach from Tshikululu! Look forward to seeing you all again in Durban!!
Most of us travelled home after a few days in France, but others were off on more travels…Lynn, Jane and Alex! Hope you all had a great time……more about Alex’s trip to Washington to follow!!!

After a whistle stop tour to Johannesburg, Alex travels back to Durban today for a couple more meetings before leaving for Scotland on Thursday evening! A busy, but successful trip to South Africa with significant progress in the planning on the IPN Conference in 2012! Keep an eye on the website for updates on progress!!

The IPN in South Africa – Tuesday 22nd!

Before jetting back to Johannesburg on Tuesday afternoon Alex visited the MIET office and met with the team who will be leading on the conference planning in South Africa, Dawn and Sashi. In Johannesburg Lynn and Alex met up with John Volmink to look in more detail at the conference planning as well as meeting with other NGOs who we hope will be involved in the 2012 conference.
